Hoshiarpur District

Out of the 22 districts in the Indian state of Punjab, the district of Hoshiarpur is one. In the state of Punjab, Hoshiarpur enjoys the status of a city and also of being a municipal council. During the initial part of the fourth century, this place was created. The army of Maharaja Karanvir Singh took over this region in the year 1809. Thus it was taken into the much bigger Punjab state. The title of ‘City of Mangoes’ was given to Hoshiarpur. This district of Hoshiarpur comes under the Jalandhar Revenue Division. It is located in the Doab region’s Bist Doab portion. The districts of Kangra and Una of Himachal Pradesh lie on the northeastern side of the Hoshiarpur district. The districts of Shahid Bhagat Singh Nagar, Jalandhar and Kapurthala are present on Hoshiarpur’s south western side; while on the northwestern side of the Hoshiarpur district there is the district of Gurdaspur. Hoshiarpur is Hoshiarpur Capital. 

On 5th May, 1930, the arrest of Mahatma Gandhi took place. Numerous people were also arrested in the district of Hoshiarpur due to their protest against the arrest. Protest assemblies and meetings were taking place in the schools of Miani of the district’s Dasua Tehsil. In the locations named Dasua, Gardhiwala and Hariana protest meetings were held and Gandhi Day was also celebrated in Hoshiarpur. Violence and killings were carried out by the police in Sirhala Kalan, Garhshankar tehsil of the district. The President of the District Congress Committee Hoshiarpur named Sardar Harnam Singh was taken into custody.

On 6th March in the year 1931, as per the Gandhiji Irwin Pact, the discharge of Mahatma Gandhi and also all the political captives took place. At the same time, the Civil Disobedience Movement was taken off the table. A demand was made in the year 1942 by the Congress that the British should totally and unconditionally quit from India. In the same year, the Congress initiated the famous Quit India Movement. On 9th August of the year 1942 Gandhiji along with all the Congress members were taken into the police custody. The barring of the Indian National Congress took place. Since a large number of inhabitants of Hoshiarpur were supporting the Quit India Movement, they were thus arrested as well. In the July 1947, the Indian Independence Act was passed by the British Parliament. Thus, India gained its much awaited independence on 15th August 1947. With an enormous eagerness and gusto the independence was celebrated; however the celebrations was tainted with communal riots and mass evacuation of minority groups of people from the either side of the border, which took place following the partition of India.

The weather condition of Hoshiarpur is quite gentle. The district has the presence of numerous hills and large forests as well. During the winter months, the temperature goes below the 5 degree mark. There are three numbers of principal seasons in the districts, namely summer, monsoon and the winter season. The summer months prevail between April and end of July. The rainy season prevails between July and September. The winter months prevail between the months of October and March. The hottest months of this district in a year are the months of May and June. 1125 mm of average precipitation is experienced by this district. As much as 75 percent of the annual precipitation takes place between the month of July and September. In the months of January and February, the rest of the 15 percent of the precipitation occurs.
