The district of Hoshangabad is situated in the state of Madhya Prades; the district headquarters is located in the town of Hoshangabad. It is part of the  Bhopal division, surrounded by the Raisen District towards the north, Narsinghpur towards the east, Chhindwara towards southeast, Betul towards the south, Harda towards the west, and Sehore towards northwest. In the year of 1998, Harda District was created by splitting the western portion of Hoshangabad District. The district lies in the valley of River Narmada, the River acts as the northern boundary of the district; River Tawa a tributary of River Narmada rises in the Satpura Range to the south and flows towards north to meet River Narmada at the village of Bandra Bhan. The Tawa Reservoir lies in the south-central region of the Hoshangabad.

Pachmarhi, a hill station and popular tourist destination lies in the Satpura Range on the southern part of the district. It acted as the summer capital of the British Raj Central Provinces and Berar. The Sanctuary of Pachmarhi is part of the grand Biosphere Preserve; it is spread across Betul and Chhindwara districts. The Rajat Prapat is also located at Pachmarhi in the distrit of Hoshangabad.

Hoshangabad district has a normal climatic condition. It experiences almost all the season. The average height above the sea level is 331 meters and average rainfall is 134 cm. The maximum and minimum average temperatures are 32 degree C and 19 degree C respectively. Overall the climate of the district is neither too hot neither too cold except during winter season.
