The District of Guna is situated in the state of Madhya Pradesh in central India. Its administrative headquarters Guna town is surrounded by Shivpuri District on the northeast, Ashoknagar District on the east, Vidisha District on the southeast, Rajgarh District on the southwest, Jhalawar and Baran disticts of Rajasthan state on the west and northwest. River Sindh flows northward along the eastern edge of Guna, acting as boundary along with Ashoknagar District, and River Parbati flows northwest crossing the southern portion of the district, acting as the boundary along with Baran District before crossing the Rajasthan territory. On 15th August, 2003 the Disrrict of Guna was divided into two parts, Ashoknagar District formed its eastern division.
Guna History
Earlier Guna was part of the primitive Avanti Kingdom founded by Chand Pradyota Mahesena. Later Shishusangh merged the kingdom of Avant, and Guna to the rising empire of Magadha. In the early 18th century Maratha leader Ramoji Rao Scindia conquered Guna, and it remain part of the Kingdom of Gwalior until recently. In 1897 the Indian Midland Railway built a rail route through Guna. Guna constituted one of the 16 districts of the newly formed state of Madhya Bharat on 28th May 1948.
