Erode is a western district in Tamil Nadu. Erode city is the headquarters. Before 1996, Erode was called as Periyar district. It holds the fame of being the native of social reformer Periyar and mathematician Ramanujam. Erode city is located on the banks of River Cauvery and Bhavani at the heart of South Indian Penisula around 400 km from Chennai. According to 2011 census, the Erode Urban Agglomeration is situated on the western banks of Cauvery River and its twin Urban Agglomeration on the Eastern banks of Cauvery.

Erode is famously expressed as  Loom City of India or  Texvalley of India as it is noted for its handloom, power loom textile products and readymade garments. The products such as bed spreads, cotton saree, lungies, printed fabrics, towels, dhotis, carpets any many more are available in bulk quantity. The other popular nick names are Manjal Maanagaram and Javuli Nagaram.

Erode History

Erode was under the local kings of Gangakulam and they formed an indigenous Chera kings and Western Ganga Dynasty. After the Cholas short rule with Dharapuram as Headquarters, Erode was taken over by Muslim rulers and later by Nayakars of Madurai. In 1799, East India Company took over the administration after the death of Tipu Sultan. After the successive wars of Marathas, Mysore and British, Erode was very much deserted and ruined. When Bristish restored the peace, the region was returned and settled. Erode was started to grow. In 1807, the garrison withdrew and during relief work of famine of 1877, the ruined fort was leveled. The place of rampart was occupied by houses and there are two significant Hindu temples found inside the fort, each dedicated to Lord Shiva and Vishnu.

Erode Climate

The climate of Erode is dry throughout the year except monsoon. The moist and cool wind from Palghat gap of Western Ghats becomes dry and loses its coolness when it crosses Coimbatore to reach Erode so it does not help to bring down the dry climate here. The hottest months are from March to May. From June to August the temperature begins to reduce. During October to November, the northeast monsoon gets heavy and by December, the rainfall gets disappeared and leaves the climate cool and clear.
