Ernakulam is of the 14 districts for Kerala state.  Ernakulam is a major metropolitan region of the state of Greater Cochin.  Ernakulam is the maximum revenue yielding district in Kerala and is also known as the commercial capital of Kerala.  It is the third densely populated district in the state of Kerala, only next to Malappuram and Thiruvananthapuram.  Ernakulam attracts the large number of tourists both domestic and international.

Ernakulam bounded to the North by Thrissur district, to the East by Idukki District, to the South by Alappuzha and Kottayam districts and to the West by Arabian Sea.  The administrative headquarters is situated at Kakkanad, in the suburb of Kochi city.Malayalam is most spoken language here.  English is the next alternative language for business.

Ernakulam History

Historically, Arabs, Chinese, Dutch, British and Portuguese seafarers followed the sea route to Cochin and left their impressions in the town.  The name Ernakulam is derived from the words Erayanar and Kulam in Malayalam, which means abode of Lord Shiva temple near to the pond.

Ernakulam District was created in April 1958, from the taluks of Aluva, Kunnathunadu, Kochi, Kanayannur, and Paravoor, which were previously part of Thrissur District.  Originally, the district headquarters was at Ernakulam, which gave its name; the headquarters was later transferred to Kakkanad. When Idukki district was created in January 1977, Thodupuzha taluk was attached to Idukki and Muvattupuzha taluk was removed to form Kothamangalam taluk.
