Dhule History
The district of Dhulia was earlier known as West Khandesh district. Rasika was the ancient name of this region. The district of Berar borders it on the east, Nemad on the north and Aurangabad and Bhir on the south. The ruler of the early Yadava dynasty named Seunchandra ruled over this place and hence it came to be known as Seunadesa. Later on, it was ruled over by the Faruqi kings and came to be known as Khandesh to suit their title. It is believed that Agastya was the first Aryan to cross Vindhya and reside on the bank of Godavari. The empire of Ashoka also included this area. The Mauryan dynasty was later overthrown by Pusyamitra, the founder of Sunga dynasty. After then, Satavahan ruled over the region.
Malik Nasir, the treacherous and cunning ruler came to the Asirgad Fort. On the occasion of his victory, a disciple of Shaikh Zain Uddin came to congratulate him. On his advice, Nasir built two cities on the bank of River Tapi. One was called Zainabad, after Shaikha Zain and the other Burhanpur, after Shaikh Burhanuddin of Daulatabad. The Farugui dynasty made Burhanour their capital. Malik Nasir defeated his younger brother Malik Iftikar in 1917. Khandesh formed part of the Akbar regime on January 6, 1601. Akbar called the place Dandes after his son Daniyal. Khandesh went to the British empire on July 3, 1818 after the Peshwa surrendered.
