Dharmapuri is one of the South districts of Tamil Nadu and was historically known as Thakadoor. The present form of Dharmapuri came into picture in October 10, 1965, located 65 km from north Salem. It is also a part of Kongu Nadu which is an ancient division of Tamilakam. The famous waterfall here is Hogenakkal and well renowned for mango farms and marble stone reserve.
Dharmapuri History
Many places such as Nilgiri, Durgam, Anjetti, Kelamangalam and Ratnagiri were added in Hosur Taluk in 1799 during the last Mysore war. These places were captured by British and Balaghat was also added to Salem district soon after death of Tipu Sultan. The present Dharmapuri was a taluk in Salem district and separated as distinct district on 02/10/1965 and Krishnagiri was carved out of it on 09/02/2004.
Dharmapuri Culture
Weaving is the major occupation here and most of the weavers are Sali Chetties. It is mixture of Tamil and Telugu community and majority caste is Vanniyar. Chitheri hills area was inhabited by Malayali tribes. Adi-Dravidars and Arunthathiars castes are scattered throughout the district.
Dharmapuri Climate
Dharmapuri has a warm climate. The hottest months are between March and May where temperature can go to maximum of 38 c. The coolest season is from December to February with minimum temperature of 17 c. Average rainfall is 895.56 mm.
