History of Datia
Datia was formerly a part of the state in Bundelkhand region. Ruled by the Rajputs of Bundela clan; descended from the younger son of a former Raja of Orchha. The state was governed as part of the Bundelkhand agency of Central India. It lays in the extreme north-west of Bundelkhand, near Gwalior, and from all sides it was surrounded by other princely states of Central India, by the United Provinces on the east. It ranked second of all the Bundela states after Orchha, with a 15-gun salute, the Princes of Bundelkhand too stood second. The land of Datia was spread across 2130 mi, 1901the population was 1759. The state was shattered with the famine in 1896-97 and later on though in a lesser extent in1899-1900. After India's independence in 1947, the Maharaja of Datia acceded to the dominion of India; later it merged with the union of India. Datia, together with the rest of the Bundelkhand agency, became the part of the new state of Vindhya Pradesh in 1950. In 1956, Vindhya Pradesh state was merged with certain other areas to form the state of Madhya Pradesh within the Union of India.
Culture of Datia
Hanuman Garhi, 'Purana Mahal or Datia Mahal' is a great piece of architecture; the people passing from Gwalior to Jhansi through rail can catch the sight of it. The Mahal was built to welcome King Jahangir after his coronation but he never showed up due to the fear of sharing his rewards with the king of Datia for his contribution in attaining the control over the Moghul throne.
