Coimbatore is the Manchester of South India as it is one of the industrially advanced and more affluent districts of Tamil Nadu. It is surrounded by Tirupur, Nilgiris and Erode district and bounded by the state of Kerala. Coimbatore city is the headquarters.  All the parts except Mettupalayam and Pollachi and few parts of Tirupur are belongs to Coimbatore. It is the second largest city, located around 497 km from Chennai. Agriculture is the major occupation in rural areas of Coimbatore although IT industries and services are booming with the advent of SEZs. It is also the second highest revenue yielding district after Chennai.

Coimbatore History

Several dynasties of south India had ruled this region successively. During 11th century, under the Chola dynasty, the pre-form of present Coimbatore was formed as a jungle village under an Irula chieftain. In 18th century, the region was occupied by Mysore in 1799 Mysore war and later it came under British Raj and ruled by British until 1947.

Coimbatore Culture

It is generally considered as traditional city but it is a cosmopolitan and more diverse city among other cities of Tamil Nadu. One can find numerous temples, especially Amman temples in Coimbatore. The city conducts music festival every year and other temple festivals are celebrated in summer.

Coimbatore Climate

Coimbatore is well known for salubrious climate as it is closely located to thick green forests and mountain ranges. It is situated at an altitude of 411 meters above sea level. The hot temperature is made cool and pleasant by the fresh breeze through Palghat gap. In general, the climate is wet and tropical and wet season starts from October to December as a result of northeast monsoon. The average temperature is from 35 C to 18 C. The recorded lower and highest temperatures are 12 c and 41 C respectively. By the retreating monsoon, the main monsoon season starts in October and lasts in November.
