Champawa District is a district in the state of Uttarakhand, which is situated in the northern part of India. The administrative headquarters of the district is located in the Champawat town. Out of all the sections constituting the eastern Kumaon Division of Uttarakhand, the Champawat District is one such section. The northern part of the district is bordered by Pithoragarh District, the eastern part by Nepal and the southern part is bordered by Udham Singh Nagar District, while on the west Nainital District is situated while on the northwest lies the Almora District. The Champawat District holds the second position of having the least amount of inhabitants in Uttarakhand, after Rupdraprayag.

In 1997, the Champawat District was composed. In the northern part, Champawat and Pithorgarh are separated by Ram Ganga River. In the south and west, Champawat, Udham Singh Nagar and Almora districts are separated by Jagbura and Pannar rivers at the same time. In the southwestern section of the state, in between the Champawat District and the Nainital District, a lengthy mountain range is situated, which functions as a boundary between the district and Nainital District. The international border between India and Nepal is made up by the Kali River in the east. From Indias defense viewpoint it is of great significance.

Champawat History
 
The district derives its name from Champawati, who was the daughter of King Arjun Deo. Previously this district used to come under Almora District. Almora District s Champawat Tehsil was relocated to Pithoragarh in the year of 1972. However, the Champawat District was recognized as an independent district on 15th September, 1997.
