Chamoli History
Till 1960, a section of the Pauri garhwal district of the Kumaon was constituted by the area covered by the Chamoli District. The northeastern part of the Garhwal strip is occupied by Chamoli District. In the central Himalayas, right in the centre of the snow clad mountain range of Bahirgiri, as termed in the old books, rests the district of Chamoli. The Himalayan Mountains are divided into three sections. Bahirgiri is one of the three sections.
The financial and monetary as well as the administrative system of the Garhwal was destabilized and damaged by the dreadful earthquake which took place on 8th September 1803. Seeing vulnerability of the region and thus taking benefit from these circumstances, the Gorkhas, under the leadership of Amar Singh Thapa and Hastidal Chanturia attacked Garhwal. In 1804, more than half of the Garhwal region was taken under the rule of the Gorkhas and till 1815, the Gorkha rule dominated this region. Raja Sudarshan Shah of the Panwar dynasty, in the meantime, got in touch with East India Company to acquire help. He gained victory against the Gorkas, with assistance from the British. The eastern portion of Alaknanda and Mandakani along with the capital city Srinagar was combined with the British Garhwal by him. This region was called as British Garhwal from that time onward. Tehri was made the capital of Garhwal as a replacement for Srinagar. This region was kept under Dehradun and Saharanpur initially by the British rulers; however afterward a new district was created by the Biritsh, who termed it Pauri. The present day Chamoli used to be a tehsil of this same place. A new district was formed by the promotion of the Chamoli Tehsil on 24th February 1960. A new district of Rudraprayag was created by combining two entire tehsil and two additional blocks of Chamoli District in October 1997.
