In the state of West Bengal lies another district named Bardhaman also spelled at Burdwan or Burdhman at times. Despite having major industrial towns such as Durgapur and Asansol, the district Headquarters are situated at Bardhaman. Bardhaman, the erstwhile Sharifabad, is the seventh most populous district in India. Burdhwan city is the main city and is on a fast pace towards growth and development. The Government is taking extreme measures to provide better residential facilities and high standards of living. In fact, they have come up with new projects for the betterment of the people. Two major projects are taking shape. One is the connection of Kolkata to Delhi which is coming up on NH 2 where Burdwan city lies. The other one is Goda, a mini township in Burdhwan. This project is given over to Bengal Shrachi Housing Development Private ltd. The Burdwan Development Authority is taking keen interest in the setting up of new buildings namely Sanskriti Lokmancha, new administrative building and Spandan sports complex.
Burdhwan History
The excavations of Birhanpur in Durgapur thana revealed that the place has traces of Mesolithic Ages. The excavation took place in the years 1962 t0 1965 in places such as Pandu Rajar Dhibi, valley regions of River Ajay, Kunur and Kopai. The excavations have proved that the ancient people were capable of well designed towns and well planned sewage, pavements and streets. The construction of the building involved fine materials like beaten polity and plastered walls. Copper was used by them and the economy was mainly influenced by agriculture and trade. Vardhaman held importance during the ancient Bengal era too. It was known as Radhadesa or simple Radha. Radha vardhaman was also an important place during the Maurya Empire. later Gupta Empire dissolved and led to formation of other smaller kingdoms.
Burdhwan Culture
Burdwan has a multi cultural heritage. The old temples which were constructed by the Sakta and the Vaishnavas are symbols of Hinduism in Bengal. The famous Kankaleshwari temple is also situated in Burdwan. Many battles were fought in this area mainly due to Mughals, Pashtuns and Marathas. Many of the Delhi sultanates visited this place. Also it was visited by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan while he was the King.
