The state of Uttar Pradesh has 71 distinct districts and Baghpat is one of them. The district headquarters lie at Baghpat Town. It is situated at 52 kilometers from Meerut and 40 kilometers from New Delhi. It is located on the Delhi-Saharanpur Highway. It was established as a district in the year 1997. Before that, Baghpat was a tehsil under Meerut. Owing to the large population of tigers that the city once had, its erstwhile name was Vyagprastha which means the Land of Tigers. Many legends are associated with the citys name. Some say that it was called Vakyaprasth meaning the place for delivering speeches. After much adieu it, it was finally named Baghpat by the Mughals.
