Allahabad Town being the district headquarters, the district of Allahabad forms a part of the state of Uttar Pradesh. According to the latest census, Allahabad is the most populous city of the state. Allahabad holds religious importance for Hindus owing to the fact that it has the confluence of three Holy Rivers. That particular place is called Sangam. The people of Allahabad mainly speak Awadhi, a combination of Hindi and Urdu and also Bagheli along with Hindi.
Allahabad is one of the most important holy cities in Hinduism primarily because of the confluence. Akbar renamed the city from Prayag to Allahabad. As they say, it is the second oldest city of the nation. It is close to Lucknow almost about 210 kilometers. The city is developing at a very fast pace. In fact, it stands 130 in the list of Worlds fastest growing cities. It was called Prayag because it is the spot where Brahma offered his first sacrifice after the creation of the World. It is one of the four major pilgrimages in the Hindu religion along with Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik. The Rivers that form the confluence are Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati. Allahabad has a rich legacy of giving rise to fourteen Prime Ministers of the nation. Some of them were either born in Allahabad or studied in the Allahabad University or were elected from a constituency in Allahabad. These figures were namely, Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Gulzarilal Nanda, Vishwanath Pratap Singh and Chandra Shekhar.
