Ahmednagar History
Ahmad Nizam Shah found the town in 1494. It was the erstwhile city of Bhingar. As the Bahmani Sultanate broke up, a new dynasty called Nizam Shahi was made under Ahmad. A new sultanate was established at Ahmednagar. It was one of the Deccan Sultanates. They lasted till 1636 when it was conquered by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. The last Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb died at Khuldabad near Aurangabad in 1707. He spent his life in Deccan from 1681 to 1707. A monument was constructed there in his memory. The place of the Nizam of Hyderabad was taken over by the Peshwa of the Marathas in 1759. It was later obtained by the Maratha Chied Daulat Rao Sindhia in 1790. General Wellesley invaded and captured Ahmednagar at the time of British rule. Later on, it was restored to the Marathas. In 1817, according to the Treaty of Poona, the British once again took control of the place.
Many Mughal monuments are present here. Ahmednagar Fort is well known for its location. It was used by the British to imprison Jawaharlal Nehru and other Indian nationalists before the Independence. A museum has been set up using few rooms in the Fort. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru wrote the famous book, The discovery of India, while he was confined to the Fort. Ahmednagar is home to the Indian Armoured Corps Centre & School, the Mechanised Infantry Regimental Centre, the Vehicle Research and Development Establishment and the Controllerate of Quality Assurance Vehicles. Training and recruitment for the Indian Army Armoured Corps takes place at the ACC&S. Initially, the city provided the base of the British Army's Royal Tank Corps / Indian Armoured Corps, amongst other units. Presently, it is the second largest exhibitor of the military tanks in the world. It is open to the public.
