Ponniyam is a historical place also. The greatest martial art legend in Kerala history, Thacholi Othenan of 16th century fought his 65th and last "ankam" in a rice field in Ponniyam against Mathiloor Gurukkal. The Gurukkal was the trainer of 10000 Nair soldiers of Kottayam King and 2000 Mappila Muslim soldiers. The field was known as "Ezharakkandam". Now it is near Choola bus stop. Othenan was victorious and Mathiloor Gurukkal was killed. But Gurukkal's friend Mayankutty of Cundangapoyil shot Othenan to death, hiding in a hole near the field. Before his death, Othenan killed Mayankutty by throwing his sword on Mayankutty's neck. This is an important story in Kerala's cultural history. And this golden saga is famous all over Kerala as "Vadakkan Paattukal". The film "Thacholi Othenan" gives us a complete history.
