The history of this village is as told by some of the family elders and may need modification and authentication from some learned historians as well. The village is named after Mehta Chanan Mal who cam eto Doaba region of Punjab from Pind Dadan Khan which is at thb order of Peshwar and Punjab. He was a warrior "Ghorh Chadha"(horse mounted mercinary) belonging to martial tribe of Mohyals.

He probably rode along with Banda Bahadur and fought alongside. He and his fighters settled in a village called Waddhi Bassi and he subsequently asked for a separate village for his family and got Chanthu Bahamana to himself. The following generations took to tilling from there.

I, Dr Manoj Rai Mehta, am 17th gerneration descendant of Mehta Chanan Mal and a practising eye surgeon in NCR and New Delhi.

My grand father Mehta Dina Nath, left the village in 1903 to train at forest college Dehra Dun and lived in West Punjab mostly moving from Channeut to Toba Tek Singh to Layallpur. He never went back to Chanthu, though he was numberdar and passed away in Chheharta near Amritsar.
