About and History Of Jhiri


 Jhiri , situated on the bank of river Beas(on NH-21) is associated with Mahabharta Era. Although on revenue or modern records it is not more than 150 years old. Before that is was very dense forest area and people of nearby villages not dares to settle here. What was that fear ? Centuries ago a demon named Jadaksi lived here. He disguisely gulp travellers in during his help in crossing river Beas at place Jogni Mata. Feared people of sorrounding area requested Vidur ( Minister of Hastinapur,and uncle of Kauravas & Pandavas) who was on his tour to Parashar Rishi. Vidur challanged the Jadaksi, and killed him in fight. Fear of that Jadaksi and Jadaksi word remained for centuries. In 16th century A saint named Vairagi Kishan Dass choose this solitude place for his retreat. And he was the person who guided king of Kullu to bought idol of Rama from Ayodhya resulting world famous Kullu Dusshera festival. With the passage of time dense forest vanished, bushes remained here. Bushes which is called jhari or jhakar in local language and Jadaksi word helped in naming this place as Jhiri. in late 19th and early 20th century Wazir (Minister of king) of Mandi and some foreigners started shaping it in a village. Wazir firstly bought people from Chouhar valley and afterward from Valh valley and made them to settle here. Hence Jhiri came into existence.
