The present temple place–Thiruvallur where the temple stands now was a water logged paddy field. A vast area which was stretching northwards till Pathinetterayalam, westwards till Cheramanparambu, Southwards till Methala and Eastwards till the Temple of Bagavathy was owned and operated by Thaliyazhcha Illam. This vast area was recordically given to Illam by the Travancore Ruler during AD 1215.

As part of a daily work for her livelihood, a harijan woman came to this place to cut grass growing in and around this paddy field. She began the cutting work but she felt some kind of obstructions in her doings. The sickle in her hand could not be moved forward for doing the cutting work. She tried to do it a little bit fiercely then there upon she found that blood was oozing from a substance and sickle was also found stained with blood. She frightened and ran to Illam and apprised the whole matter to the Karanavar of the Illam. Immediately an astrologer was called in and on the astrological process it was found that a self born sivaliga was there and should be properly adorned with a temple. Thus a temple was built and other sub deities were also instituted by providing individual temples. This was happened around 800 years back.
