MURUD-JANJIRA
Murud-Janjira, popularly called the twin islands are about 60kms from Alibag. These places boasts of having one of the longest beaches in the Konkan belt. Murud is famous for its enthralling beach, green spread of coconut and beetal palms and most importantly its magnificent fort.
The vast sea-shore evokes a feeling of warmth in the visitors and it is a perfect gateway to escape from the hustle-bustle of the city. The Dattathreya Mandir which is located on a hilltop, is a beautiful temple dedicated to Lord Dattathreya, who is said to be the embodiment of Lord Bhrama, Vishnu and Shiva. This temple provides a majestic view of the underlying sea and greenery. The Bassian island is the perfect place to spend the holiday lazily. Janjira fort is the highlight of Janjira and it take us back to the ancient times, The Nawab palace, Kashid and Nandgaon beaches are worth visiting. Kattamaran and tonga rides too can be enjoyed.
People tired with routine lives can come and loosen their nerves here. This beach offers the countryside feeling to visitors.
PLACES TO SEE
Janjira Fort : This fabulous and strongest sea fort is located in the Raigad district. It is about 165kms from Mumbai and 42kms from Alibag. This majestic fort was built in the 16th century on a vast area of 22 acres by the rulers of Ahmednagar. British, the Portuguese, the Dutch and the Marathas made many futile attempts in capturing the fort. Fort is built on the rock and consist of two wells which has cold and sweet water. Fort has 19 lofty towers with large cannons on it. Kalal Bangadi, Landa Kasam and Chavri are the famous cannons. The fort had all basic amenities like accommodation for officers, water tanks, mosques etc. It is easily accessible from the Rajapuri harbour.
Murud-Janjira Beach : It is a spectacular beach which attracts the tourist with its clean and unpolluted shores. The palm and the beetal plantations along the shore increases the charm of the beach. The beach offers majestic view of the sunrise, sunset and the fort. Swimming, ferry rides and boating are the main attractions. Medium and high budget hotels are available here.
PadmaDurg fort : Popularly called the Kasa fort, it was built by Sambhaji (Son of Shivaji) to attack and capture the Janjira fort. Permission from the Indian Navy has to be taken to visit this fort. Boat facilities are not available to this fort.
HOW TO REACH
By Air : Nearest airport is in Mumbai, 165 kms.
By Train : Roha which is about 1 hour drive from Murud-Janjira is the nearest railway head. Roha has trains to major cities.
By Road : Murud-Janjira has Government buses to Mumbai, Thane, Pune etc.
