Jhumri Telaiya

Jhumri is the name of a village, which is located in the Indian state of Jharkhand. The word ‘Tilaiya’ is derived from the word ‘tal’, which stands for pond. Also, the word jhumri stands for folk dance. There are many conceptions as to from where the name of the place has been derived. People have different theories. 

It was a general thought, that this place called Jhumri Tilaiya is a mythical place; it does not exist in the reality. This place can be compared to Timbuktoo in the sense that, it is also place that exists in the imagination. 

Tilaiya used to be a principal centre for mica mining once upon a time. Huge deposits of mica were found by the British during the time period of 1890’s. In order to manufacture space and military equipments, these mica deposits were taken out and sent to USSR; however after the disbanding of USSR and when manmade alternate substance was discovered in place of mica, the mining activities in this place was put to an end. One can still see the large bungalows and houses of the mine owners.

Tilaiya dam and reservoir: The very first dam to be constructed in the district of Koderma by Damodar Valley Corporation on the river named Barakar is this Tilaiya Dam. It is an electric power station. The length of the dam is 1200 feet, while the altitude of the dam is 99 feet. The capacity of the dam is 4 MW. In order to keep a check on floods, this dam was built. One can find many educational centers in the neighborhood of Tilaiya Dam. Sa Tilaiya is the most renowned; it is a mica mining centre. 

Sainik School Tilaiya: On 16th September, 1963, the establishment of Sainik School Tilaiya took place. Initially it was not such a big institution; however now it is quite big and reputable. First and foremost this school outlines the character and molds the cadets for the entrance into the NDA. This school has outlined the standards for the academic activities as well that of the extra-curricular activities very high. 

By air: The closest air terminal to this place is the airport in Gaya.

By rail: The closest railway station is located in Koderma, which is located at a distance of 5 Kms.

By road: One can reach this place via buses, taxis and private cars.
