OverView of Phiro
Phiro village lies in the south-western part of Wokha district, Nagaland, India at an altitude of 1400 m above sea level approximately.It is about 60 km from the state capital, Kohima and is accessible by NH 61. The village is being inhibited by the Lotha-Naga tribe of Mongoloid race that speaks Tibeto-Burman language. Phiro village is one of the oldest village under Wokha district and also considered as the epicenter of Lotha-Naga culture and traditions.The village is around 600 years old and 18-21 generations had lived till today according to oral history.
The village had a rare distinction of having Morung in every colony (five). But only two such Morungs have stood the test of time. The famous and the magnificient Mt. Totsu also called the "Grand Canyon of Nagaland" lies here. It is said that this place is guarded by a lady spirit, two big crab and two pythons! It is an ideal place for camping and trekking as Mt.Totsu is largely consist of vertical cliffs and surrounded by thick tropical evergreen forest. At the back of Mt.Totsu one will find a place called "Mongokhvu", bowl-shaped jungle that is so thick that one would need a torchlight to pass it through even during broad daylight! However, most of the biodiversity are degrading due to rampant deforestation.
