OverView of Marem
Marem is one of the oldest Tangkhul Naga villages located at the heart of Raphei region (Northern Tangkhul) along the national highway connecting Ukhrul headquarters and Jessami village. The village is known for its traditional salt production processed from salt spring (salt brine).Marem is their local dialect and Tangkhul is their second language. They also speak English alternately whereas Hindi and Meiteilon (Manipuri) is foreign language for them. The village is also known for its high literacy rates among Tangkhul villages. The people in Marem are Christian by faith. It borders Chingjui, Razai and Namrei in the North, Chingai in the East through its famous Mongreekato mountain range, Ngahui (Awangkasom), Kuirei and Kalhang in the South and Peh (Paoyi) in its western side along the river Rangazak.
The village and its forest is rich in pine, oak, ngatha (a smaller species of bamboo tree) and other plants including wild animals. They are the first among the Tangkhul villages which has Reserved Forest known as Marem Jajom Reserve Forest purely an undertaking of the Village Authority without any governmental assistances Currently, Marem village has approximately 180-200 households. Christmas and Ludoh (Luita/Luira) are the two most important festivals observed/celebrated annually by the village. The people are known for hospitality.
