OverView of Umedanda
Umedanda (Omedanda) in Ranchi District is a village of historical importance, where iron smelting community of Asur lineage i.e. Lohandias were settled, even before the Mundas appeared in the scene more than 2500 years in the current Jharkhand. It is one of the few villages, where the lead iron smelting community-Lohandias (also spelt as Lohondia or even Loharias ) still reside.Bahadur S.C Roy, a well known Ethnographers and Anthroplogists of 20th Century has mentioned "Omedanda" in his famous book " Mundas and their Country"(1912) as follows:
"The Mundas and Santhals crossed the Sone and marched on in a south-easterly direction along the borderland, that separates the present District of Hazaribagh from the Districts of Palamau and Ranchi. Not far from the borderland is villagre Omedanda, which Munda Tradition names as the first settlement of Mundas in "Nagpur"- as they name the Ranchi District"
