OverView of Hirri Bala A
Tahir Mansoor Mir (Archaeologist) Hirri village is situated towards the western direction of kupwara town of almost 5-6 kms. It is situated in between the two kerewa (wuder) sections ;one in its eastern direction and second in its western direction with almost in equal elevation of about 60-70 feet. The northern part of Hirri Bala is connected with Hundi, making it a sloppy tract of settlement area. The famous nalla Anymnore flows in its eastern direction; which irrigates its agricultural lands from Hundi to Hirri Payeen. Two more streams flow in the southern direction of the village known by the name of Louch Kehmil and Houd nalla. All these streams along with the springs of Samaduin naag and other springs irrigate great piece of its land. The eastern and western parts of this village come under the wuders lands (Pleistocene lake deposits). These are the treasure trove lands for potters. There is no any availability of irrigational facility to these lands. People cultivate Maize and orchards which are fed by the seasonal rainfalls.Hirri has been divided in to three revenue villages of Hirri Bala, Hirri Payeen and Hanjipora. Hirri bala has a CD block known as Qadirabad block created in between 2014-15 when Muffi syed replaced Umar Abdulla. Hirri bala is divided into two pachayat halqas of Hirri- A and Hirri- B. Its tehsil station and post office lies at Trehgam with its pin code as 193224.
Hirri Bala is famous for its three destinations of 1.Syed Aalimeer's Shrine at Reshipora 2. Shrine,Spring and grand chinnar tree and a wooden Mosque Built by the local Wali (saint) commonly known as Qadir Kral Dervesh. 3. First Higher secondary School opened in 1956 .
1. Shrine of Syed Aalimeer (RA) is a wooden made shrine with carving of water logged flowers in geometrical pattern on its pillars and ceiling. The mosque is said to have been built by the local resident from Drugmulla.
2. The Mosque with a pound of 900 sq. feet approx. and a small spring under the grand Chinar tree has been built and dug by the famous saint Qadir kral or Qadir Dervesh. The mosque is the attention for the preservation and conservation of this cultural legacy. This mosque is wooden made built in the last quarter of 20th century with beautiful carving of different geometrical designs of water logged plants and flowers. But Now this tangible cultural heritage is deteriorating due to wooden moths and has become brittle And need to be preserved.
3. The Higher secondary School with a vast playground was opened in around 1956; is the first educational institute in the whole utter pargana; when shivloora served as the headquarter. This educational institute imparted education up to Metric to the whole utter areas.
The history of this village is neither written nor preserved. The name of this village seems to have been associated with the local resident of Hindu lineage "Hari" who might had formed and settled in this village for its good site catchment area. "Hari" might have been the head of the clan or the chieftain and settled in this village in the early historic era. Gradually with the passage of time the name of Hari got changed in to Hirri. This fact is supported by the occurrence of three archaeological mounds. There is an archaeological mound which now comes in between the villages of Hirri Bala and Hirri Payeen known locally as Cumberhard (tsemberhard) just in the western direction of Hajam Mohalla Hirri Payeen. This Archaeological mound is very rich in terracotta's, Osteological material, ancient Hindu sculpture etc. and yield high percentage of phosphate indicating that the site was occupied for many years. The second Archaeological mound situated just near the present Jamia Masjid Shareef Hirri Bala yield Mullers, querns,other stone implements and terracotta, tracing its history back to the early historical periods.
The village also witnessed the occupation of Buddhist activities which pushes its history back to the 3rd century BC. The Buddhist sculpture with lotus depictions recovered from time to time in the illicit excavations,etc indicates its deep rooted history from the introduction of Buddhism in kashmir. But with the introduction of Islam in kashmir by Mir Syed Ali Hamdani (RA) from 1379 on words. His 700 Followers were send to different directions in the valley. Syed Alimeer (RA) was deputed to this village. This suffi saint (Syed) propagated Islam in Hirri and its adjoining area.
The population of this village is more than 4000 souls. All the people are Sunni Muslims of Hanfia order. The people are tall, fair in complexions, cooperative, Sympathetic and polite in nature. Lone's are more polite and Malik's and Bhat's are more Aggressive; indicating their Hereditary characters transmitted from generation to generation. All these are reverted from the Highest order of Brahmans and Kshatriyas. Suffis and Akhoons are very few in number. Pirs and Khans are also quite few in the village. Mir's, Kummars, Najjars and shiekhs form bulk of its population. Kashmiri is the local language of this village. people consume rice as their stable food.
