OverView of Bellagam
Bellagam is an old village located on the outskirts of Polasara in the district of Ganjam in Odisha, India. It is famous as birth place of Late Biswanath Das (b. 1889) the first elected Prime Minister of Odisha (1937) who once again became Chief Minister of the state in 1971. He was the Governor of Uttar pradesh from 1962 to 1967 and remained the President of the Servants of the People Society of India till his death in 1984. The village is also the birth place of the internationaly famous vedic scholar Er. priyabrata Das (b. 1932).
Bellagam is the H.Q. of Bellagam Panchyat comprising of six villages, viz., Bellagam, Chhanchaniapalli, Madhusudanpur, Baghadi , Manashila and Dimbiria. The village has a population of about 2500. It has educational facilities from Primary to High School level. The Kanark Durga Vidyapitha is a reputed High School in the area.
There are several temples in and around Bellagam viz., Radhakrishna Temple, Lokanath Temple, Gopinath Temple and Kanak Durga Temple. The famous tourist places like Mahalingeswar, Brudhakhol and Singhasani are nearby.
Agriculture is the main source of income. There is irrigation facility available in the village. Canals from the Baghua Reservoir and the Lift Irrigation points meet the demand of the farmers. The main crop is Rice. However other crops like Sugarcane, Groundnut, Black gram, Green gram, Potato, Vegetables etc. are also grown. The main market place is Polasara which is just two k.m. away.
There is no industry in the area except a few Rice Mills which process and supply rice to local and outside places like Brahmapur and Bhubaneswar.
The approach road to the village is not good due to apathy of the local politicians. Medical facility is not available in the locality. People depend on the Polasara PHC for treatment. The village is not progressing well as almost all educated people have stayed away from the village on account of employment and don't prefer to come back after retirement. The main street bears a deserted look as many houses are not inhabitated.
