OverView of Kovilpatty
Kovilpatty is a small village comprising of more than 160 house. It is good old village comprising of dry and we land raineed area. This village is situated below the Perumal temple hillock. Many of them are farmers. They have small land holdings.most of the farmers are having dug Wells for irrigation. There is a pond outside the southern part of the village. During the Aranmanai or kings regime the land was cultivated for the Aranmanai people and hence the water was siphoned through the superstates called in tamil as Madagu. The normal vegetation is paddy. plaintain, sugarcane, vegetables, tomatoes, green leaves, onion and flower cultivating.major flowers are Jasmine, mullai, pitchipoo, Roses, chrysanthemum (kanagambaram). In earlier days vada malligai, marikolundhu was cultivated. Dry land cultivations are Jawar, ragi, kambu, kuthiraivali, samai, are the main cereals are bring cultivated. Green grams black beans, avatar, miscellaneous family grams are being cultivated. long trees like beema silver oak type vagal, punjab trees, coconut cacesalpeneae trees, kodukkapuli trees are available. In some wet lands Groundnuts Sweet potato (sakkari valli kilangu) were also cultivated. our village is famous for small seedlings for onion, bring a land cutting twig method of grafting flower plants especially Jasmine and pitchipoo and Samantha poo.In the village many of them are good farmers. They cultivate
grains and vegetables for their livelihoods. During 1956 very few houses were
pucca houses and many of the houses were thatched houses. some houses were tiled
houses. One Mr Balaiah was a landlord and was a cash crop cultivator and one of
the important person in those days and his house was pucca house with upstairs
with inside staircases. The pillars we its teak woods and was looking like a
palace house. Barring him many people were earning through cultivation and
flower merchants. few were earning food through daily wages. few people were
growing both sheep and cows and bullock rearing. Really the villages were
looking with natural beauty. Veterinary country doctor Kumar was treating
medicine to the cattles. He was growing shees herd.Mr Andi Velu were having
bullock and young calfs. It is to be noted that most of the farmers were having
bullocks in their house for ploughing and farming.
There was a primary school for time immaterial. classes were
from first standard to fifth standard.1962-63 the school was converted to
NILAKOTTAI Panchayat union school.one headmaster and two ladies teachers were
working. Now the school has been elevated from primary to high school. Though
there was a school during earlier period literacy was poor as many of them were
doing cultivation of land. Many other students from nearby villages were
attending school. south of the kovilpatty villages are Kongapatty, malai patty,
pillaikadipatty, East side Thatharian patty, Panchalakurichy, Singamptty west side
is Perumal malai hillock western north Valankottai south of Old
silukkuvarpatti, Kuppapalanipatty which are the small villages are boundary to
the Kovilpatty village. Many boys used come from these villages for the primary
education.
