OverView of Kothanur
Kothanur is a typical old village characteristic of a true rural people who are very friendly and welcoming. At the corridor of the village towards west (left) is a huge lake which was a reservoir for the village once upon a time and the lake has a high raised tank bund. From the corridor, half a kilometer road leads to the main Kothanur village. At the entrance of the village is a big Peepal tree (Ficus religiosa) which has been there from centuries. Immediately after the Peepal tree is another old rare dwarf gulmohur tree (Delonix regia, var. flavida) with its twisted and contorted branches with hints of its perilous survival from grazing goats. These two trees have been the relics of the village standing amidst the vagaries of man and nature since ages. Friendly faces always welcome outsiders in the village. The village has a government milk dairy/sterilization and collection unit. All the farming community supply the unit with their produce. The socio-economic status of the village is mainly associated with generation of revenue thru sericulture, production of coconut and coir, vegetables such as ridge gourd, bottle gourd, pumpkin, finger millets, peas. Village folk have domesticated some animals like goats, sheeps, cows and buffaloo, dogs and cats. The place is also famous for jamun, cashew and mango crops. The village is in dry zone and is regarded as an arid land with very little rainfall. Long long time ago (sometime during or after independence), when the main occupation of the villagers were grazing and farming, the livestock of the village would die due to famine and diseases. The dead animals were simply laid to rest deep within the jungle. The rotting carcass would attract the vultures which would come in huge flocks to consume the decaying meat as recalled and narrated by my mother. The village is also the place known for one of the freedom fighter - Late Shri K.M Papanna (1917 - 1995) who is the pride of the village. K.M Papanna was a tall man with strong and energetic personality, he was also in position among the Panchayat during his period. He was known for his unbiased rule, decisions and verdicts during the local body meetings. The man always represented the community issues and strived for betterment of the village by solving people's problems and evoked a sense of nationality among the youth. Though Kothanur village is also famous for a variety of wildlife such as wildboar, deer, loris, chameleon, mongoose, russels viper, cobra and other reptiles.Edit below overview about Kothanur
