Rajkot district is one of the 26 districts of the Indian state of Gujarat with its headquarters situated in Rajkot city. The third most advanced and 4th largest district of the state, it is surrounded by Kutch district in north, Surendranagar and Bhavnagar districts in east, Amreli and Junagadh districts in south and Jamnagar district in west. Globally ranked 22nd in the world's fastest growing cities and urban areas from 2006 to 2020, it is the 35th urban agglomeration in India.
It is 245 km from the state capital Gandhinagar, located on the banks of the Aji River and Nyari River. It was the capital of the then Saurashtra state from 15 April 1948 to 31 October 1956 before getting merged in the bilingual Bombay State on 1 November 1956. It was merged into Gujarat State from bilingual Bombay state on May 1, 1960.
Rajkot History
After independence Rajkot was made the capital of Saurashtra State, with U. N. Dhebar as its Chief Minister. It was separated from the bilingual Bombay State on May 1, 1960 after which it was merged into the newly-formed state of Gujarat. With the death of Thakore Pradyumansinhji in 1973, his son, Thakore Manoharsinh Pradyumansinh, succeeded him to make his political career. He served as a Member of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly for several years. He was also the state Minister for Health and Finance in the Government of Gujarat. Mandattasinh, his Heir Apparent, has adopted a career of business and environmentalism.
Rajkot Climate
Rajkot has a semi-arid climate. The weather is hot and dry in summers from mid-March to mid-June and the rainy from mid-June to October. The city receives 500 mm of rain on average in the monsoon season. Mild climate is there in the months from November to February with the average temperature being around 20 C, with low humidity.
Cyclone is the most important weather phenomena associated with the city of Rajkot. It generally occurs in the Arabian Sea after the rainy season. It rains a lot with high-speed winds during the time of the year after the monsoon season as well as the months of May and June. The amount of rainfall and winds is lesser in June than the post-monsoon time. Rajkot is also prone to thunderstorms frequently in the months of June and July. The temperature ranges between 24 C and 42 C during summers. In the months of winter, Rajkot experiences a pleasant weather with the temperature varying between 10 C and 22 C.
Rajkot Culture
The people are predominantly vegetarians and are majority of them are against any form of hunting. This has resulted in the survival of rich fauna in this city. The women are very fond of jewelry, specially, large chains, pendants and other heavy gold jewelry, which are a common sight during marriages, festivals and family functions. The attire changes according to the coming seasons ad festivals. Gujarati flavor of the Sari is popular in women whereas men wear flowing Kurtas and formal wears.
With a multicultural society, many languages, like Gujarati, Hindi, Urdu, English, Sindhi, Bengali, Tamil, Malayalam and Marathi are spoken here with Gujarati, Hindi, Urdu, and English being well understood. As Rajkot is the part of Kathiyawad, its people are also known as Kathiyawadi. Due to the citys colorful nature,Rajkot is frequently referred to as "Rangilu Rajkot". The people of Rajkot believe in enjoying life to the fullest. They mostly close their business between 1.30 pm to 4.30 pm to take rest.
