Pratapgarh is a district in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The district headquarters are situated at Pratapgarh Town. It forms part of the Allahabad division. Agriculture is the main occupation and the fruit Aonla is grown in abundance. The district lies on the Allahabad-Faizabad main road. It is 39 kilometers from Sultanpur and 61 kilometers from Allahabad. It came into existence in 1858 and is one of the older districts in the state. It is 137 meters above sea level. Awadhi is the major language spoken.

Pratapgarh History

The district that forms part of the Faizabad division derives its name from its headquarters which are named Bela Pratabgarh. The ruler of the locality, Raja Soel Uddin rose to power in the 17th century. He placed his headquarters at Rampur near the old town of Aror. He built a home there and named it Pratabgarh. Subsequently the locality around the fort came to be known as Pratapgarh Soel Uddin. The district was constituted in 1858 and its headquarters were established at Bela. It later came to be known as Bela Pratapgarh. Bela derives its name from the temple of Bela Bhawani on the bank of river Sai. Bhayaharan Nath Dham, Katra Gulab Singh and Haudeshwar Nath dham are some of the famous temples in Pratapgarh. Durga Bhawani temple is another famous temple near Kunda Tehsil. It is too behind in the fields of education, sports, science and technology.
