Lying in the Kathiavar peninsula, Porbandar district is one of the 26 districts of Gujarat state in western India with its headquarters situated in Porbandar city. It shares border with Jamnagar district in the north, Junagadh district in the south and the Arabian Sea in the west. It is the second least populous district of Gujarat, after Dang, as of 2011 census. Even though it is the birthplace of the most famous leaders of the world, the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, it lacks basic tourist infrastructure amenities. However, the area surrounding his home has been turned into a temple.
Tourists commonly complain about the town being not very well known and the heavy traffic in the city making the bus journeys more time taking. Despite of having a excellent beach which could have been promoted as a tourism destination, proper cleanliness has not been maintained by the government. Chowpati beach was given a new look by the district collector in the year 2003, furnished with well arranged sitting arrangements for tourist and commuters. There is skating ring for children also. The cleanliness level of this beach is comparatively much higher the many beaches across the country, even though the administration does not give the required attention in this regard. Fishing industries provide a lot of employment opportunities to the people of the city and the neighboring districts.
Porbandar History
The state covered an area of 1,663 km, encompassing 106 villages and a population during the British Raj, in 1921, with its population over 100,000 people. The state acceded unto the dominion of India in 1947 after independence. With effect from February 15, 1948 it was merged with the 'United State of Kathiawar and eventually came to form part of the present-day state of Gujarat.
