Patiala District

 

Out of the 22 districts in the Indian state of Punjab, the district of Patiala is one. The northern boundary of the district is shared by Fatehgarh Sahib, Rupnagar and Mohali, the western boundary is shared by Fatehgarh Sahib and Sangrur districts, the eastern border is surrounded by the districts of Ambala and Kurukshetra and on the south-western side the district of Kaithal of Haryana is present. 

In 1722 founded his new state, when he relocated himself to Barnala along with his band of brave young forces. Baba Ala Singh was a Sikh Chieftain hailing from a village named Rampura Phul. Afterwards, a small village name Patiala was created by Baba Ala Singh, when he migrated to a tiny village called Lehal. Thus under the control of the Sirhind Government, the district of Patiala came into existence. Sirhind, Tohana, Mansa, Bathinda, Sangrur, Barnala and Fatehabad District were included into the Patiala State by Baba Ala Singh. During the rule of the Maharaja Sahib Singh of the Phulkian Dynasty in the year 1809, the state of Patiala came under the administration of the British custody. In was done so because the rulers of Patiala were scared that the Maharaja Ranjit Singh would cross over the river Sutlej and capture the district. During the period from 1809 to 1947, this state remained under the British security. After the Indian independence, the Indian Government eradicated the Patiala Princely State. It was made into a district. However, the Patiala District was again separated into Fatehgarh Sahib District on the 13th April of the year 1992. 

The Hindus of Sirhind were the initial inhabitants of Patiala. They established their trades and business centers on the exterior part of the Darshani Gate. Chur Majris, located on the boundary of the city of Patiala, was home to the people belonging to the lower caste. Dharampura Bazar was an area for the dancing girls. The elite class used to visit this place frequently. The ruling class of people became very wealthy and affluent, when they were given Jagirs during the later part of the 19th century. They build large houses with expansive gardens. Ramparts and 10 gates were built all around the city by Maharaja Narendra Singh in order to fortify the city. His Highness Maharaja Dhiraj Captain Amarinder Singh is the head of the present royal house. In Patiala, people still considered the royal family in a high esteem, in cultural as well as political sense. 

The weather condition of Patiala is dominated by heated summers and chilly winters. The climate remains quite dry. Monsoon season stays for three months. 688 mm is the average yearly rainfall. May is considered to be the hottest month. During the summers, the maximum temperature touches the mark of 43.1 degree Celsius. The chilliest month is considered to be the month of January. During the winters, the minimum touches the mark of 2.1 degree Celsius. 

Patiala is important for both its religious as well as cultural background. As a centre for education, Patiala was also in the front position. Mohindra College, a Degree College, was considered to be the first college in this portion of India. The college is situated in this town. It has been constructed in the year of 1870. The architectural style of the structures in the district has also seen advancement. One can see the gentle fusion of the sophistication and attractiveness of the Rajput style along with the elements of the location styles. Following the Partition of India, hundreds of people relocated from Pakistan to Patiala.
