North and Middle Andaman district, which is one of the 3 districts of the Indian Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, is located in the Bay of Bengal. District headquarters is located at Mayabunder town. Middle Andaman Island is the central island of the Great Andaman group of islands. Population of Middle Andaman is constituted of Bengali Settlers, Tamilians, and Keralites. The main occupation of the people is farming and Agriculture. The island is also home to Jarawa people.
Its coastline was swamped by the tsunami resulting from the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, though the effect was far less severe when compared with other Islands of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Middle Andaman's main towns include Rangat, Billiground, Kadamtala, Bakultata and Betapur. The northern town of Mayabunder, though geographically located on Middle Andaman, is administratively attached to North Andaman district. This district was created on August 18, 2006 after the bifurcation of the erstwhile Andaman district, which included all three tehsils of Mayabunder sub-division of this erstwhile district.
