Nashik is a district in the state of Maharashtra. The district headquarters are situated at Nashik city. It is also sometimes referred to as Nasik.
Dhule district borders Nashik on the north, Jalgaon on the east, Aurangabad on the southeast, Ahmednagar on the south, Thane on the southwest, Valsad and Navsari on the west and Dangs on the northwest. The Western Ghats or Sahyadri range stretches from north to south across the western portion of the district. The western portion is mostly hilly, intersected with ravines. It is suitable for simple cultivation only. The western slope of the Ghats is drained by several rivers, including the Daman Ganga River, which drains westwards to the Arabian Sea.
The eastern portion lies on the Deccan Plateau. Hence, it is open, fertile and cultivable. The Chander range runs from east to west and forms the chief divide of the Plateau region. The Godavari River originates in the district and drains east towards the Bay of Bengal, and all the streams to the south of the Chander Range, including the Kadwa and Darna, are tributaries of the Godavari. The Girna River lies towards the north of the Chander range. The river along with its tributary, Mosam flows westward through fertile valleys into the Tapti River.
