Nainital History
Way back in the year 1839, an English businessman from Rosa, Mr. P. Barron, who was a sugar trader and his friend, an enthusiastic hunter, got lost into the hills for the purpose of hunting and reached the astonishing spot of the lake while finding their way back. So enamored was Barron found the view of the quiet and calm lake very charming. He decided to leave his business of sugar and set up a European Colony on the shores of the lake. In the year 1841, the discovery of the lake, which adjoined parts of Almora, was announced in the issue of the Englishman Calcutta.
By the year 1847, it had become a popular tourist hill station. The Nainital Municipal Board was formed on 3rd October 1850, the second to be set up in the North Western Provinces. The administration transferred the land to the affluent Sah community of Almora to assist the formation of a town. The people of the community were directed to build houses on the land. In 1862, Nainital became the summer capital of the North Western Provinces in the year 1862. After it was made the summer Capital, a notable expansion of the town occurred with the growth of marvelous bungalows and construction of marketing areas, rest houses, recreation centers, clubs etc together with the secretariat and other administrative units. It also became one of the main centers of education for the British who wanted to give their children a fresh and natural environment for studies.
