Mahamaya is a district in the state of Uttar Pradesh. It was earlier known as Hathras. The district headquarters are located at the Mahamaya Town. The district comes under the Aligarh division. The district came into force on May 3, after combining parts from both Aligarh and Mathura. The proposal of making a separate district was placed on May 6, 1997. Hathras was once a part of the Brij region. It had all types of activities going on within like industrial, literature and cultural. It is said to have roots in the Mahabharata as well. The folk tales as well as the archaeological data prove that it is an old city.

Mahamaya History

Many people from this district participated in the freedom movement started by Raja Dayaram. The first rail was started between Hathras road and Mathura cantonment on October 19, 1875. An old form of wrestling called Malla vidya is still famous among the people. The remains of the rings can be found even to this day. A Shilalekh has been set up at the Hathras City Railway Station to mark the arrival of Swami Vivekanand. It also shows that his first disciple was named Sadanand who was the station master. Kanya Gurukul, an educational institute furthered the reputation of the place. It was awarded graduate and post-graduate degrees to many girls. Similarly newly established Mangalaytan is developing as a world famous Jain pilgrimage. It is present in the Sasni district.
