Bharatpur District is a district of Rajasthan, which is a state in western India. The districts headquarters is located in the town of Bharatpur. Maharaja Suraj Mal established it in 1733. It is situated in the Brij region. In the past, Bharatpur was an impenetrable, well-designed and well-fortified city. It was the capital of Jat Kingdom,which was governed by Sinsinwar Maharajas. In the history of India, a significant part was played by the trio of Bharatpur, Deeg and Dholpur. It is positioned at a distance of 55 km of the west of the Agra city and 35 km from Mathura. It is also the administrative headquarters of Bharatpur District as well as the headquarters of Bharatpur Division of Rajasthan. The history of the Royal House of Bharatpur can be traced back to the eleventh century AD.
The title of the most admired royal status in Rajasthan is given to this region. There is a forest located within a distance of almost 5 km from the district headquarters. The forest is called GHANA, which stays green during the rainy season. The State Engineer prepared the Bharatpur Ghana plan in 1896, in order to drive and restrict the wild cattle to the dense forest. This dense forest contains 250 different species of migratory birds during the monsoon season and the winter season. It is popular throughout India and is known to be a great sanctuary of birds.

Bharatpur is known as The Eastern Gateway to Rajasthan. Maharaja Suraj Mal founded Bharatpur in 1733 AD. Bharatpur, in the past, was an impenetrable fortified city. It is extracted out of a region whose name was Mewat previously. In the history of India, a significant role was played by the trio of Bharatpur, Deeg and Dholpur. The name of place Bharatpur was derived from the name of Bharat, who was the brother of Lord Rama. Laxman, another brother of Lord Rama, was worshiped as the family deity of the Bharatpur. According to what the legend says, ruler Laxmans name is engraved on the state arms and seals. LOHAGARH is another name given to Bharatpur. The district shares its bordr with Gurgaon district of Haryana on the north, Mathura and Agra districts of Uttar Pradesh on the east, Dholpur and Karauli on the south, Jaipur on the southwest and Alwar on the west, all in Rajasthan.
