Banda is a district in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The district headquarters is situated at Banda. It forms part of the Chitrakoot division. Khajuraho and Kalinjar, two sites of historical and architectural importance are present in this district. Apart from these sites, it is also known for its Shajar stone which is used in jewellery. Khajuraho is a World Heritage Site famous for its elaborately carved temples. The fortress of Kalinjar is known for its meticulously carved rock temples and has a long history of war behind it. Hindi and Bagheli are the major languages spoken.
Banda city is a municipal board as well. It lies towards the south side of the River Yamuna. Banda city is the administrative headquarters of Banda district. The town is well connected to major cities with railways and state highways. It is situated close to the right bank of the River Ken.
Banda History
Banda district initially consisted of the tehsils of Karwi and Mau until 1998 after which they became the new Chitrakoot division. Banda was also a town and district of British India. Then it was part of the Allahabad division of the United Provinces. The district was occupied by 22,565 people. Also it was a military cantonment then. One of the biggest jagirdars and a very royal family of Bundelkhand in 1920s and 1930s lived here. Rai Bahadur Raiyse,Pt Mannulal Awasthi was the patriarch then heir to which is now Mrs Amita Bajpai her son Akshay bajpayee great grandson of Rai Bahadur Awasthi is the Prince of Banda. Seventy five percent of Banda belonged to Rai Bahadur Pt Mannulal Awasthi up to 1947 and 10% to the nawab of Banda under British India.
Banda Culture
Kalinjar Mahotsav is the most important event in this region. A weeklong event is celebrated every year to promote Kalinjar Fort's Heritage & Tourism. Many cultural and social activities take place on this occasion.
Banda Climate
The district enjoys three distinct seasons hot summers, pleasant monsoons and cold winters. The months from March-June are the summer months. It rains from July to September and the winter season takes place from October to February. The patterns in the climate have changed over the years. The reason is the environmental imbalance.
