Amreli History
Amreli was a small village with an ancient history originally. Part of various kingdoms and empires were established in the area. When the Marathas began acquiring territory and began establishing their reign over the region in 1780s, Amreli became prominent and gradually the villages turned into towns. The Gaekwads acquired their own territory and chose Amreli as the headquarters for their Kathewad pranth, which included Dwarka mandal. They also levied taxes on the other rulers of the Kathiawar peninsula. Amreli grew and prospered during the period from 1801 to 1820 under Vithalrao Devaji, who was appointed the Diwan during this period. In order to realize revenue, Vithalrao Devaji converted most of the adjoining forest land into farm land. He also built the Nagnath Mahadev temple. For the first time compulsory and free education policy was adopted in Amreli, in 1886 under the Gaikwad regime. Dwarika and Okhamandal was part of Gaikwad - Amreli state from 18th century to 1959. After 1959, the two cities were merger with Jamnagar district. The district became the part of Bombay State after the independence.
