The state of Haryana is composed of 21 districts, out of which the Ambala District is one such. The administrative headquarters of the district is located in the town of Ambala. The city of Ambala is a municipal corporation as well. On the boundary of Haryana and Punjab states of India, the district of Ambala is situated. Ambala Cantt and Ambala City are the two sub-areas of Ambala from the political point of view. The distance between the two areas is around 3 kilometers. The cantonment area contains huge areas of Indian Army and Indian Air Force. The tourism industry in Ambala is quite good because of its geographical position and it has thus benefitted the regional tourism as well.

Ambala History

Due to the outbreak of malaria in 1841-1842, the British vacated the cantonment at Saphera. Due to desertion of this place, formation of the Ambala Cantonment took place in 1843. One of the three Strike Corps of the Indian Army, which is the 2 Corps, is accommodated in this place. In 1847, Ambala was declared to be a district. The creation of the district took place upon the amalgamation of the jagir estates, which were till this time owned by the independent chieftains and later got lapsed and was taken away by the British Indian Government. The border of Ambala kept on changing during its life of 160 years. Earlier the region of Ambala covered the tehsils of Ambala, Saphera, Jagadhri, Pipli, Kharar, Mohali, Ropar and Nalagarh. At various stages of time, addition of Kalka-cum-Kurari State, Pinjore, Manimajra, Kasauli & Sanawar to the district took place.

Given by the British, one of the ancient and biggest airbases of IAF is located in Ambala, which is the Ambala Air Force Base. In 1947-1948, during the Kashmir Operations, Instructors of the Advanced Flying Trainig School flew Spitfires and Harvards from this airbase. For numerous years after this, Ambala remained the front line airfield. Indian Air Force installed in it many aircrafts from this airbase. From this base many aircrafts such as Vampires, Ouragans, Hunters and many more were flown. B-57 bombers of Pakistans Air Force made a strike at this airbase for a short period of time. The 7 Wing resides in the present time in this airbase, along with squadrons of Jaguars and MiG-21 Bisons.

Ambala Climate

Continental type of climate prevails in Ambala. The summer months experience severe heat, as well as the winter months remain distinctly cold. The temperature goes up considerably in the months of May and June. During this time, the temperature rises above the 48 degree Celsius mark. The winter months see the temperature dropping to almost freezing point.  The climate of the region is semi-arid and tropical also. The central and east part of the country receives much rainfall due to the Monsoon current. However due to the proximity of the That Desert to Ambala in addition to the absence of coasts in any place nearby, the region does not get the full amount of the Monsoon current. The months between July and September enjoys the 70 percent of the total annual precipitation. The months between December and January obtains the rest of the precipitation. In Haryana, the maximum rainfall receiving region is Ambala. 47.16 inches per year is the standard precipitation.
