The Haryana state and Bharatpur borders the district on the north and east direction respectively, while it is surrounded by Dausa on the south and by Jaipur district on the west. After Jaipur and Jodhpur, Alwar occupied the third place in the list of most populous district of Rajasthan, in the year 2011.
Alwar is a city. The administrative headquarter of the district is located in the city of Alwar. It is positioned at a distance of 160 km south of Delhi and almost 150 km north of the capital city of Rajasthan, Jaipur. On 10th May 1956, Indias maximum temperature was recorded in Alwar, which was around 50.6 degree Celsius. In the past Alwar used to be the capital of the significant state of Alwar. During the British Raj in India, Alwar was spelled and written as Ulwar. Because of its spelling the place always used to be at the end of alphabetically ordered lists. So, it was changed to Alwar by the king to bring it up in the lists. Alwar was first heard of, in the story of Prahald Hiryanyakashyap. Later it was mentioned in the Mahabharata as the place where the Pandavas resided for one year during Barath, meaning the hidden exile. Under the reign and governance of Gurjar Prathihars and Badgujars, their allies, Alwar became important and came into the lime light. It was a fraction of the huge Northern Indian Empire, which is also called Gurjara Pratihara. In the past the town was given the name Matsyanagar, which means the city of fishes.
Alwar History
Many places of historical importance and tourist interest are there in the city. One of the greatest forts present in Rajasthan named Bala Qilla is there in the district. Situated in the Aravalli Hills, the fort is believed to be a never invaded or never conquered fort by any king. Nikumbh Mahal is positioned right behind the Balla Qilla fort. There are numerous small and minor places to visit in the city, like the old museum having a fine assortment of paintings, armours, old weapons as well as the Sariska Tiger Reserve which is situated right in the district. The district has the Arvari River ruuning through it. Also close to Kesroli, there is a heritage hotel called Hill Fort Kesroli.
The place was abandoned by the Muslims. The over-powered the rest of the people. In 1857, Pran Sukh Yadav fought alongside Rao Tula Ram of Rewari. He inhabited the Nihalpura village amd Behror Tehsil of Alwar District, with the family of the soldiers who died. Alwar was included into the dominion of India after India became independent. The state combined with the three adjacent princely states on 18th March, 1948. It formed the Matsya Union. Again, this union was included and taken into the Union of India. The present existing state of Rajasthan was created by combining the Matsya Union and some other princely states, along with Ajmer, on 15th May 1949. After the Indian Independence, it was Jai Dayal Yadav and the Prime Minister of Matsya Union who brought education to the rustic areas of Alwar.
