Sonamundi be better called Sunamudi in Odia. Since Bargaon is located nearby where a branch of the Kalchuris that ruled from Raipur and some of their descendants settled at Bargain, Sonamudi must have been settled by the Kalchuris who belong to Haihay lineage. A section of Shoundik people take Sunamudi/a as their surname in Western Odisha and Srikakulam regions. Sonamudi must have been a village granted to any Shoundik. It is supposed to have been named after a gold-ring awarded to the person with grant of the village. This name also exists for two villages in Balangir Dist of Odisha, Sonamudi rivulet in Rairakhol Sub-Divn in Sambalpur Dist, another tributary of Bagh river in Boudh Dist,and for small rivers in Rayagada and Ganjam Dist.in Odisha. Sunamudia Sahi is a colony in Brahmapur city in Odisha. In West Bengal and Jharkhand also exists Sunamudi for names of rivers.
