The setting is in a bar wherein two friends have been in a debate regarding the refugee situation in the state. There is a clash of ideas and differences in opinions regarding the matter. However, the question is whether this debate is political. One consideration to point out is the setting. The pub is a recreational place where small talk and gossip basically prevail, thus making it unusual for anyone to engage in a random conversation regarding the refugee situation in the country. Nevertheless, the said element is a minor detail in considering whether the discussion is political or not. If the discussion is carried out in a place wherein policies and other form of political practice are normally done, it is easily recognizable as a political discussion. However, the content and the context in which the conversation possess essentially reveal how political their discussion was.  It satisfies the fact that there was a context of power and values regarding their individual perspectives on the refugee situation. However, it doesn’t end there. It is the effect of the discussion that should also be taken into consideration. The fact on whether the two friends would have done something with respect to their views on the refugee situation should also be taken into consideration. Their individual actions would be able to satisfy whether their views would actually affect the wider community. Whether they join in movements or make other people aware of their knowledge of the refugee situation through other conversations would likely have an effect on the general society. It could raise awareness for the people and help those in authority make decisions that would actually make a difference on the existing situation.

This is best displayed in the case of the woomera detention centre where an uncomplicated place where refugees dwell became a political site. The site became a political place because the remonstrations carried out by the refugees triggered a diversity of opinions regarding the matter. This provided a situation wherein power and values are contested. Similarly, the presence of the media made an apparent awareness on the existing contested values and principles.      

Conclusion

Politics takes place in all types of communities and is at hand as an essential means to steer clear of conflict because of multiplicity of belief and opinion and therefore required to uphold as peaceful as subsistence as possible. Consequently, the nature of politics is one that is not effortlessly characterized. Politics is in itself a contradiction in terms, being at its bases extent, very uncomplicated, tackling simple chains of command within small factions and at its most intricate, a complicated course of decision making having an effect on throngs of individuals. It can simply take place in circumstances where people subsist in co-existence. Politics is a way of generating a more controlled society, by granting means to work out differences, both through non-violent and vicious ways, which as expected takes place involving members of a faction. Authority is the fundamental characteristic of politics, but to possess authority, one have to have power. For that reason, politics in its diverse types is in attendance anywhere and whenever people create a community.
