Edit below overview about Nurpur Jattan
Gujjars and Jutts socialized with each other and attended the social functions like weddings and other similar events.Jutts smoked Hooka with Gujjars and the two sides had their own Lambardars. Nurpur Gujjars stayed put and were the last to leave to go to the refugee camps in Behram a village 4-5 miles away. The Jutts remained very friendly with their fellow Gujjars and told them not to fear as they will not harm them. As the riots , arson and looting were reported in other big near by Muslim villages like Panam, Dhagam, Kama, Keriha and Muslim exodus of farmers on their bullock carts passed thru Nurpur making Nurpur Gujjars very afraid. In the end, only a few villages were left with Muslims farmers. It was the mobs of marauding people that roamed the country side to attack the Muslim villages where they were still staying put. Then one early morning under the cover of darkness the Jutts found that their neighbors had left silently. A strange silence except braying of some cattle and smoke from the half lit hearths was noticed by Jutts. It was a sad day in Nurpur and by mid day crowds of people from other villages arrived to loot and set fire to the properties of Gujjars. However no Gujjar was killed.Four or Five still remained hiding in the fields. Some proud young man named Roshan, Feroz used to be seen months after the departure of others. Roshan was killed one day in the Sugarcane field the others went to the Behram refugee camp.
The village is not old and may have been settled around early part of 19th century or later part of 18th century. The area is low land and got lot of surface water drained from hills, thus raising the water table below the ground. The original settlers must have worked hard to clear the marsh land and make them cultivable. Among Jutts, the main clan was of Dhadhas, Pannus, some Purewal and some Sanghras. Two families of Carpenters, Water carriers, one family of Barbers.
Jutts have been migrating abroad from this village since 100 years, but more so in last 50 years and are now in Calgary, Vancouver, Victoria, Toranto areas, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, California, England, Holand, Wolgoolga, Australia. The Harizon community has also migrated to Italy, England.
This has brought a lot of change in changing the village sky lines with new homes. Thanks to the financial support from folks from abroad. The village has produced professional in field of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, Medical Doctors ,Engineers, IAS, Army. The opening of new roads along the canal has made the village more accessible and brought near to the markets and mundis.
As the remaining folks from all castes in the village also trying to migrate to foreign lands to join their relatives, many homes are empty and locked with occasional visits of earlier occupants who are now called NRI s. It is a phenomenon all over in Punjab but more so in Doaba .
Due to intensive cultivation of Rice and Wheat and pumping of subsoil water the subsoil water level has gone down and poses threat to future agriculture. A day may come when only a very few Jutts could survive and the land may look different.
The village however is making progress as the streets are paved, there is power supply, pipped water supply to all the homes and a basic drainage system. There is Gurudwara with active participation of all the village.A primary school. Many kids go to schools in towns like Garhshanker, Banga or other places and are picked up by a bus . More social interaction between Jutts and other castes. The connectivity by road to Moranwali and to the road along the flood drain canal has made the Nurpur easily approachable.
