The origin of the Gohil Rajput clan goes back to the sixth century AD when Muhideosur Gohil, born in 542 A.D. after the sack of Vallabhi and the only male survivor of the clan, went on to become chief of an area near modern Idar in Gujarat in the year 556 A.D, and held sway till his death in 603 A.D. His descendant Kalbhoj Gohil or Bappa Rawal Gohil seized Chittor and became ruler of Mewar in 734 A.D. A little more than two-and-a-half-centuries later in 973 A.D., Salivahan Gohil, the Gohil ruler of Mewar, and 11th in descent to Bappa Rawal Gohil, moved away with part of the clan from Chittor to Juna Khergarh (present-day Bhalotra near Jodhpur) on the River Luni in Marwar, leaving behind his son Shaktikumar Gohil with the remaining members of his kin. There is still a village there called 'Gohilon ki dhani'. Thus for two-and-a-quarter centuries, both Mewar and Marwar were ruled by the Gohil Rajput clan.Later, after Ala-ud-din Khilji ravaged Chittor in 1303 A.D. Meanwhile, the Gohils who had migrated under Salivahan continued to rule over Marwar. After the formation of the Delhi Sultanate in the early part of the thirteenth century the Rathore clan, pushed out of Kannauj, travelled to Marwar. In turn the Gohil clan was displaced from Marwar.After it Gohil Rajputs were splitted from each other and marched towards area of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. They settled in different areas of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan and they established their own small small princely states in different areas. Among of it Gohil Rajput ruled till 1947 in Bhavnagar, Rajpipla, Lathi, Ghogha, Palitana, Sihor, Vallabhi and many more place in saurashtra region. One group of Gohil Rajputs reached at Champaner (Pavagadh) and settled there. That time Patai Rawal was ruler of Champaner. The Muslim emperor of Gujarat, Mahmud Begada assaulted Pavagadh and won the hill on the boundary in 15th century. Patai was defeated and killed. Mahmud Begada shifted his capital from Ahmedabad to Champaner for some time for reasons of diplomacy. There is one proverb in Gujarati language “Champaner tutyu ane Mumbai vasyu” A kingdom of Champaner went under Muslim rulers. Muslim people start to rob Hindu people houses and properties.Hindu people came in Religious crisis when Muslim ruler started converting Hindu religious people to Muslim forcefully. Then in 1484 AD all homestead started flee here and there. All Merchants flee to Surat, Ahmedabad, Baroda leaving behind their assets. Rajputs also flee wherever they get a way. Gohil Rajputs and some of other people marched towards east means Dahod of Panchmahal district. They roamed in area of Dahod and cut a forests and settled there, they established villages.In 1556 AD Gohil Rajputs established a village named “Tunki”. Later it divided in two parts named “Tunki vaju” and “Tunki Anop”. They lived in tribal area for long time that why in 1950 AD as per The Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) order, 1950 they fall in Scheduled Tribes category and assumed sub caste as a “Hindu Pateliya”. Still today Gohil Rajputs are living in Tunki village.Tunki village is located in Garbada Taluka of Dahod district in Gujarat, India. It is situated 7km away from sub-district headquarter Garbada and 21km away from district headquarter Dahod.
