OverView of Limbaganesh
In ancient times, a demon used to harrass and torture villagers of village in Champawati district ( present day Beed) which had acquired name Limb out of its enormous no of lime trees. Villagers worshipped Lord Ganesh and prayed him to end this demon.Lord Ganesh got this demon killed.Villagers built a ganesh temple. Since then this village is known as Limbaganesh. This 2nd centuryBC temple still exists.
Limbaganesh was ruled by saatvaahanas and then by Yadavas. Since 1330 till 1480 it was under Bahamani rule.Thereafter it became part of Ahmednagar Nizamshahi.1638 onwards it became part of Mogul empire. In 1729 after Peshwa Bajirao defeated Moguls at battle,Chhatrapati Shahu appointed Revenue Officers in this province to collect land revenue from this region.Arrangement was out of 100% collection,25% used to go to Satara,65% to Nizam at Aurangabad.balance 10% was retained by Revenue Officers for their establishment,administrative and defence expences.
Rangnathrao Kanitkar was 1st Maratha Revenue Collector of Limbaganesh. He was followed by Vyankaji and then Ganesh Vyankaji.
After Ganesh Vyankaji,Moreshwar Girimaji was granted jagir of 12 villages by Madhavrao Peshwa. Chintamani Moreshwar was made sar Deshmukh of Balaghat province by Sawai Madhavrao Peshwa in 1795 which comprised 52 villages. As per terms of conditions agreed under settlement of Kharda,this jagir had become part of Maratha empire officially. However, with fall of last peshwa Bajirao II at hands of Britishers ,this part was returned to Nizam. Its next ruler Moro Chintamani was son in law of Maratha General Bapu Gokhale but he maintained good personal relations with Sir Robert Cottonmoney,HEIC's agent at Hyedrabad who later became Governor of Bombay Presidency. In 1862,jagir was terminated on the suspicion of rulers that Kanitkars had supported 1857 mutineers. However,during Sir Sikandar Ali Khans regime,Jagir of 12 villages was restored. This jagir was abolished in 1969 by then Prime Minister Mrs.Indira Gandhi. Its present ruler HH Rajendrakumarji lives in Mumbai and visits his ancestors sit during traditional ganesh festival
