On 6th April 1936, the last Maharaja of Coochbehar Jagadwipendra Narayan was crowned. In December 1936 King Jagadwipendra Narayan went to Patlakhawa, a favorite hunting ground of the Royals of Coochbehar, along with King of Jaipur, Jaisingh, for a month long hunting game. During big game hunting, Jaisingh was attacked by a tiger and was saved by one local Jitendranath Basu Chowdhury. On the same day King Jagadwipendra Narayan gifted some land parcel to Jitendranath Basu Chowdhury, in Pundibari Village, a place between Coochbehar and Patlakhawa. Previous to this, there is no trace of organized human habitat in Pundibari. Jitendranath set up a habitat in Pundibari in 1937 along with some 10 odd families.
