Mandi word in hindi means market but mandi town is said to have its name after Mandavaya rishi a saint who did a hard penence on the bank or Beas river. It was part of Suket State and seperated from Suket in 1200 AD as a indipendent State. But mandi town was constructed by Raja Ajber Sen in 1527 AD. He built palace and Bhutnath temple while his queen built Triloki nath temple and he made Mandi capital of erstwhile Mandi State Modern Mandi distirct is made after merging two princely states of Mandi and Suket in 15 April 1948. It is known as chhoti kashi as there are many temples including Bhutnath ,Trilokinath., Tarana and many others.Mandi is in the centre of present Himachal pradesh and famous for fashion and beauty. Mandi is situated along the left bank of beas river in the foothill of shivilik . there is a borad vally of plain fields between mandi and sundernagar. the famous fair of the Mandi is Shivratri celeberated during Februray month envery year.Rock salt mines of Gumma and Drang in mandi are also famous in state. The chiefs of Mandi and suket ae said to be from a common ancestors of the chandervanshi line of rajputas of sena dynasty of Bengal and they claim their descent from Pandava of Mahabharata. Ancestors of the line believed to have ruled for 1700 years in Inderprasth(Delhi), until one Khemraj was driven out by his Wazir,Bisarp, who then took over throne. Khem Raj had lost his kingdome and fled to eastward and settled in Bengal, where 13 of his successors ruled for 350 years. From there they had to flee to RoparPunjab where also king Rup Sen was killed, and his son Bir Sen fled to the hills and reached Suket. The State of Suket is said to have been founded by Bir Sen an ancestor of the Sena dynasty of Bengal. Mandi was the part of Suket and seperation of Mandi as independent state took place in 1200 AD. Th then reigning Chief Sahu Sen had a quarrel with his younger brother Bahu Sen who left Suket to seek his fortune elsewhere. Bahu Sen after leaving Suket settled in Mangalan in Kullu where his his descendents lived there for 11 generations. then then Chief Karchan Sen was killed fighting with Kullu Raja and his rani, who was pregnant at that time fled to her fahter who was then Cheif of siokot, who had no son. Here she gave birth to baby boy named Ban, after name of tree under which he was born. Ban had hradly crossed the age of 15 when he defeated chief of Kilti who used to plunder travellers. On the death of chief of Seokot Ban succeeded to the chiefship of Seokot. He after some time killed rana of Sakor and took possession of his lands. He then changed his residence to Bhiu on the bank of Beas and few miles from the present Mandi town. Mandi emerged as the seperate state in the beginning of the 16th century. Down the line of descendents of Ban came Ajbar Sen, ninteenth in descents from Bahu Sen who founded Mandi town in 1527 AD the capital of erstwhile Mandi state and headquater of present Mandi district. He was probably the first to assume the designation of Raja. Ajber Sen was the first great ruler of Mandi. He consolidated the territories that he inherited and added new territories that he wrested from the hands of his neighborus. He built a palace and adorned it with four towers. He also built a temple of bhutnath while his rani constructed that of TrilokinathDown the line of descendents was raja Sidh Sen who succeeded raja Gur Sen in 1678 and Mandi have never been so powerful before his reign and after that never was.
