HISTORY OF VILLAGE BUTERLA
History of village Buterla has been greatly influenced by the history of Chandigarh. Therefore, it is necessary to discuss the history of village Buterla in three parts:
1. History before the birth of Chandigarh (before 1950)
2. History during the birth and growth of Chandigarh (1951 – 1980s)
3. History after Chandigarh took over the farm land of village Buterla (1980 – present)
PART 1: HISTORY OF VILLAGE BUTERLA BEFORE THE BIRTH OF CHANDIGARH (up to 1950)
There is no written record of the history of village Buterla before 1950. However, if the word of village elders is being believed, history of village Buterla traces back to 1810. Since the pace of change in those days was slow, one can assume that the village did not change very much until 1950.
In 1950, village Buterla was a small farming community (Population about 150). At that time, there were about a dozen families. Most of the families did farming. One blacksmith family helped the farmers to make farming implements. Three families did not own any land. They either worked for the farmers as sharecroppers or made shoes for the farmers.
All homes were made of mud bricks. Streets were unpaved. Waste water from the homes flowed through the middle of the streets. There was no electricity, running water or toilets. Farmland served as toilet. People used cow chips and wood for fire to cook food.
In summer, people slept on the roofs of their homes at night. Stars in the Milky Way galaxy were clearly visible. Absence of pollution and electric lights made it possible to see shooting starts.
Large majority of the people in village Buterla had no formal education. There were about six people who had high school or less education. One was a teacher, one a putwari, one a physician (worked away from the village), two were in the army etc.
Nearest primary school was in village Badheri. Nearest high school was in village Lambian. There were two high schools (Christian High School and Khalsa High School) in the city of Kharar about 10 kilometers away.
The village had three wells. Two of the wells had Persian wheels to irrigate the land near the village. A couple of farmers had their own wells and Persian wheels to irrigate the land farther away from the village. The farmland extended at least 2 kilometers to the east and north. To the south, farmland boundary was mark by a seasonal creek (Nadi). To its west was village Badheri about 300 meters away.
There were four Banyan trees in village Buterla that provided much needed shade in summer. Animals and people rested under the banyan tree during hottest part of the day.
Farmers grew all kind of crops: Wheat, corn, sugar cane, lentils, peanuts, potatoes, onions etc. They sold part of their crops in Kharar, Manimajra or Kalka. Every farmer had a few buffalos for milk. They all used oxen for farming. Two families had camels to drive the Persian wheels.
Village Buterla was located on the Ropar road about 10 kilometers east of Kharar. From Kharar, one had to take Tonga ride to village Buterla. A Tonga is a horse drawn two-wheel cart like vehicle. Bus service was very infrequent.
When coming from Kharar, one could see two tall palm trees from faraway. The palm trees acted like a landmark for Buterla. These palm trees (Khajoors) were located at the east boundary of the village. A dirt road about eight feet wide connected the village to the paved Ropar road through the farmland. The dirt road was about 100 meter long.
This dirt road had a fence on both sides. This was not a fence made of barbed wire. It was a fence made of cactus plants. It was a special cactus called Thohar. It had round branches about two feet long and two inches in diameter. The branches and the trunk were covered with lots of thorns. No animal would dare to stick its head through this fence to eat the crop on the other side. Actually, no human would dare to stick his arm through this fence either. Wild grass and wild bushed grew naturally into the fence protected by Thohar plants. In Punjabi it was called Gohar. It became very muddy and messy during the rainy season.
In one section of the fence, there were rose bushes. These bushes had magenta color roses. They smelled great. Every bloom season some people plucked a few of the roses and made Gulukand. By the way, when you mix rose petals with sugar and leave it for a few days, it becomes Gulukand.
There was quite a bit of vacant land within the boundary of village Buterla. Farmland was outside the village boundary all around village Buterla. People used this land to save heaps of animal dung and other trash to make manure. They used this manure as fertilizer in farming. They also used this land to make, dry and store cow chips. They made conical structures called Guharas to store cow chips. Every farming family had their share of this land. This vacany land played a crucial role in the growth of village Buterla after the Birth of Chandigarh.
PART 2: HISTORY OF VILLAGE BUTERLA AFTER THE BIRTH OF CHANDIGARH (1950 -1980s)
Punjab lost its capital Lahore to Pakistan in 1947. Indian state of Punjab decided to build its new capital on the base of Shivalik hills near village Buterla. Chandigarh was conceived in 1950. Initially, there was lot of resistance from farmers in the villages. They demonstrated against it. At that time, Jawaharlal Nehru was the prime minister. Over a period of few months, the government defeated the demonstrators.
Chandigarh bought the farmland and residential land of a dozen or so villages. People in those villages had to move to other areas of the state. Four of these families moved to Buterla. These families were given the land left over by families who moved to Pakistan in 1947.
In 1952, Chandigarh began to grow. Initially, Chandigarh boundary was up to sector 22. Village Buterla and its farmland was outside the boundary of Chandigarh. But as Chandigarh began to grow, it transformed village Buterla and other nearby villages in many ways.
Chandigarh needed construction workers. People who came to work in Chandigarh rode their bikes from great distances. They needed cheap accommodation to spend the night nearby rather than traveling great distances back to their home every day. This started a home building boom in village Buterla and other nearby villages. Farmers build quarters on their vacant land (Government prohibited building on farmland) within the boundary of village Buterla.
A quater is ten feet by ten feet room, with 10 feet by 5 feet veranda and a small behda. In those days, a quarter could be rented for ten rupees a month. A bricklayer in those days made six Rupees a day. A person making six rupees a day could afford to rent a quater for 10 rupees a month.
As the time passed, every farmer in the village who had vacant land built quarters. Population of village Buterla began to grow. By 1965, population of village Buterla grew to about 700.
Farmers began to grow more vegetables and less of grains because now there was market for vegetable in Chandigarh. Farmer made more money selling vegetables than grains. Farmers also increased the number of buffalos they owned. They sold the milk in Chandigarh. Milk became another source of money for farmers. In large families, some adults worked as laborers in addition to helping with farming. This dual role increased family income.
Farmers who understood the importance good schools moved their kids from village schools to Chandigarh schools. Nearest middle school was in sector 22. Nearest high school was in sector 21. Nearest college was in sector 23. Punjab University was in sector 14. These schools were decidedly better than village schools. Some Buterla kids took advantage of these schools to get higher education to improve their lives.
PART 3: HISTORY OF VILLAGE BUTERLA AFTER CHANDIGARH TOOK OVER FARMLAND OF VILLAGE BUTERLA (1980s - Present)
During the 1980s, Chandigarh decided to expand beyond sector 22 and took over the farmland of village Buterla. But it decided not to take over the residential land. Farmers who wanted to continue in farming profession had to buy land in other parts of the state and moved away. But some of these farmers stayed in village Buterla and worked in Chandigarh.
Government decided to improve the living conditions in village Buterla. Over a period of time village Buterla got electricity, running water and toilets. Streets were paved with bricks. People replaced mud brick homes with fired brick homes. In some cases, two story homes were built mostly for rent. Rental property in village Buterla is cheaper than in Chandigarh. More new shops opened up in village Buterla. This village has now become a part of Chandigarh. Parts of sectors 36, 37, 40, 41 and 42 sit on the farmland of village Buterla.
Some of the kids who took advantage of the educational opportunities provided by Chandigarh achieved successful carriers. Some of them have moved to America, Canada, England and Australia.
