Veerapur is a small village with about 3000 residents on the way from Haveri to Hangal. It is about three kilometres from the Highway.Someone had once told me that this is perhaps the only village where every resident is a Jain except two persons - the carpenter and the barber. I was very curious and was looking forward to see this village. And this happened only after a couple of years in October 2016. The access road to Veerapur is surrounded by lush green paddy fields dotted with coconut trees. The Vardha river flows very close by. The bore well water at the village is very sweet and potable.As I drove into the village, I could see children playing happily under the shade of the trees. Unlike the other villages in the district I could not see any open defecation and pigs by the road side. The road looked fairly clean. As you enter the village you see a big Jain Basadi. I inquired with an old man who was sitting by a small house by the Jain basadi as to who the head of the village is, and I expressed my desire to meet him. Very soon the head of the village came and we exchanged greetings. My two friends and myself were invited by the head of the village to his house. His quaint little house was so cool in spite of the hot sun outside. We were offered sweet lemon juice which was prepared by the lady of the house herself. I inquired about the residents of the village and the headman confirmed that all are Digambhar Jains except two families.I was very impressed by the simplicity, friendliness and hospitality of the people of the village. We thanked the headman and the other persons whom we met at village and took leave.Prof.
